Education and Credentials
Education
I began studying midwifery in 1999. In July of 2000, I became a
Certified Birth Doula through DONA and in August of 2001, I enrolled
in the Medical Training Institute's Midwifery Program After completing
four semesters with them, we experienced two terminal illnesses in
my immediate family and I had to drop out of school to help with care
taking. I continued to study on my own, however, and later enrolled in
the  Midwife to Be Program - a long-distance course based out of
South Carolina. In October of 2005 I graduated from the Midwife to Be
course and began practicing as a DEM (Dirent-Entry Midwife).

In May of 2006, I applied for, and received, a BSN degree through

Rochville University. This is a life-experience degree and was granted
based on my previous credit hours through both MTI and MTB, as well
as clinical experience gathered through apprenticeship, both as a
midwife, and in a local family practice clinic.

I have been in practice on my own since January of 2004. Because

Mississippi does not have a state-specific board exam for midwives, I
am currently practicing as a DEM or Direct-Entry Midwife. I am in the process of complete the PEP process for NARM (North
American Registry of Midwives
).NARM’s Portfolio Evaluation Process (PEP) is a competency-based educational evaluation process
that includes NARM’s Skills Assessment. I am currently scheduled to sit for the NARM exam in February of 2010. While this will
not change my legal status here in Mississippi, the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential is universally and
internationally accepted as the Gold Standard of midwifery education.

As a Direct-Entry Midwife, I am certified in adult and infant CPR and
Neonatal Resuscitation. I am also scheduled for B.E.S.T.
certification in May of this year. Birth Emergency Skills Training for Out-of-Hospital Providers (BEST)™ is a certification course
that prepares out-of-hospital midwives to manage obstetrical emergencies with even greater confidence and proficiency.
Like my
CPR and NPR certification, B.E.S.T. training must be re-newed periodically.

Through the years, I have participated in numerous Continuing Education opportunities including  (but not limited to) courses

and seminars offered and accredited through the American College of Nurse-

Midwives, the California Board of Registered Nursing, and the American

College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

I am a member in good stand with MANA (Midwives Alliance of North

America) and meet and exceed their guidelines for Core Competencies, as

well as their
